Student survey: Social Networks Addiction

Everything is possible in our time of high technologies and increasing progress. Sometimes most absurd things become a reality. So, what about social network addiction?
Nowadays people, especially young generation, satisfy their needs to communicate with social networks. They often disregard opportunities to go to public entertainment places, visit friends and avoid face-to-face talking, replacing it all with a virtual “life”. They even started to take photos in order not to keep a pleasant moment in memory but to publish it in social networks and get positive comments.
The purpose of this survey was to identify the total number of people using social networks, which of them are most popular among students, to find out the reasons of their registration on such sites and how much time they spent there.
According to the survey, 100% of respondents have access to the Internet and use at least one social network.  More than 90% of them check their profile several times a day.
The next question shows us which social networks students use mostly. Almost 100% of the responders use VKontakte, about 55% of them also use Instagram and 48% use Facebook.  Only 18% use Twitter and Odnoklassniki. About 8% mention other social networks such as MySpace, Tumblr, Diary and others.

About two thirds of respondents created their accounts because of friends or hobbies. 12% registered because of own curiosity, and others say that they don’t remember.
Then the question is about spending time on the Internet. The results seem disappointing, because the biggest part of this time is devoted to social networks.

More than 87% of the respondents confess that they can’t delete their profile or just stop to check it without any reasons. Almost every respondent denies his or her affection to social networks, but agrees that such sites are becoming a global addiction.

In conclusion, we can say that our hypothesis was partly confirmed. One of the worst things is that people do not keep track of time they spend in social networks. There is still another half of their time that they spend to study and on other things, but it’d be much better if people spent their time on real life communication rather than virtual.

  1. Anastasia, thank you for such a vital topic! Now it is really a problem among young people. I'd even call it the obsession. Unfortunately I cannot say I can imagine my life without it and I'm sorry about it. But still I believe we will be able to cope with it)
